New nonstop service to London expected to generate millions for British Airways & Austin economy
AUSTIN — The first regular transatlantic flights to and from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport will begin next year.
On Tuesday City officials joined British Airways to announce the start of non-stop service to and from London, England. The new nonstop service to London expected to generate millions
The flights will run five days a week. British Airways says it will eventually increase service to every day. The new service will have a financial impact of nearly $70 million in its first year. That impact is expected to grow to $74 million annually.
“It will create approximately 1,100 jobs within the air service industry. London is obviously Austin’s largest traffic generator in Europe. Securing this transatlantic non-stop route has been a top priority,” said Lew Little of the City of Austin Chamber Board.
Service at ABIA has seen steady growth in recent years. Airport officials say it’s up six percent from this time last year. ABIA generates about $2.4 billion to the local economy each year.
With the addition of British Airways, the airport now has non-stop service to 41 different destinations.
The first flight to and from London Heathrow is scheduled to begin March 3, 2014. Tickets are on sale now.
